SENSITIVITY AND AWARENESS
- FOURTH EDITION
- A GUIDE FOR DEVELOPING UNDERSTANDING AMONG CHILDREN
- USE WITH TURTLE BOOK SERIES
Is your school involved in inclusion or mainstreaming programs? If so, the new 96 page guide is a must. It has easy-to-use background materials about various disabilities, session plans and activities for primary and middle school children by Norma McPhee, plans and activities for pre-primary children by Paddy Favazza, Ed.D., PLUS special sensitizing experiences for leaders and non-disabled children by Eleanor Grater Lewis. A new story, Hide and Seek by Sheri Plucker has been added as well as new take-home pages to reproduce.
Whether Turtle Books are being used by an advocacy group, a parent group within the schools and classrooms, or by classroom teachers preparing children to receive a child who has a disability, the carefully prepared discussions, suggested activities and take-home sheets will increase the effectiveness of the program. The guide is also a valuable tool for parents who are attempting to help siblings understand a disability of a family member.
Though the new guide has seven read aloud stories, reproduceable pages and many activities, the guide is not intended to be a stand-alone item. It is designed for use with the Turtle Books series.

SIGNS OF JAYS
By Linda Kurtz Kingsley
Illustrated by Todd Fargo
Author Biography
Peter and his mother rescued two abandoned jays. Caring for the baby birds became a project for Pete, Mike, who was deaf, and for Pete’s mother’s hearing impaired class students. Just as the children in the hearing impaired group were preparing to mainstream, so the boys prepared the jays to be mainstreamed back into the wild. This is a beginning signing book. It has twenty four signs and the standard ASL alphabet included.
Reading Signs of Jays together and learning some of the signs included may open areas of understanding and provide opportunity for discussion with friends and siblings as children are included in regular education classrooms.
